High-pressure hydrogen research to achieve a new breakthrough

It is believed that hydrogen, which is the first element in the periodic table of elements, breaks at a sufficiently large external pressure to form a new metal atom state, and this atomic state may have a temperature exceeding room temperature. Conductivity is therefore a major scientific frontier issue for nearly a century. The research team led by Eugene Gregorains, an expert in the Institute of Solid Physics at the Institute of Solid State Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences, provided the latest experimental evidence and inferred the existence of this new atomic state. The relevant results were published online on January 7 in the international academic journal Nature, and were selected as the cover with the title of "Pressure Point." The work was jointly completed by the University of Edinburgh and the Institute of Solids in the United Kingdom.

In the experiment, the researchers used diamond to anvil technology to reach the pressure limit beyond the geocentric, obtained the lattice vibration spectrum of hydrogen and its isotopes helium at room temperature and high temperature conditions, and obtained a new fifth phase under high pressure. The evidence, this phase is thought to be a precursor to the metal state of hydrogen predicted by theory 80 years ago. Therefore, this work is considered as a milestone in the field of hydrogen research, and it may have a profound impact on understanding basic physical laws and the future energy revolution.

Eugene Gregorains is an internationally renowned expert in high-pressure experimental research. In 2014, he was introduced to the Institute of Solid State through the “Special Foreign Talents” program of the Central Organization Department. He worked on the high-pressure scientific issues of hydrogen and obtained a series of Important results. The first high-pressure hydrogen inflator put into use in China was creatively constructed, making it possible to study high-pressure hydrogen. The research results obtained by the Gregory Gantz team not only created a high-pressure record for solid-state hydrogen research, but also was considered as an epoch-making breakthrough in hydrogen research in high pressure.
