Japan Develops New Technology to Efficiently Utilize Oil Sand to Extract Gasoline

A research group at Kyoto University in Japan announced that they have developed a new technology that uses inexpensive iron ore as a catalyst to increase the amount of fuel extracted from oil sands, such as gasoline, by approximately 40% over existing methods.

Oil sand is a mixture of clay, water, petroleum, and asphalt. It looks like black molasses and can be used to produce liquid fuels such as gasoline. However, its utilization efficiency has been low.

At present, when oil sand is used to extract crude oil, it is necessary to first insert the pipeline underground, and then inject high temperature and high pressure water vapor to separate the sand from the crude oil. After extracting gasoline from the separated crude oil, it will be left with hard-to-use ultra-heavy oil, and the new technology developed by a research team led by Professor Miura Koichi of Kyoto University will be able to reuse these ultra-heavy oils.

The new technology first added iron ore to the vessel and heated it to 420 degrees Celsius. This made iron oxide, the main component of iron ore, play a catalytic role in decomposing the ultra-heavy oil to produce gasoline and diesel. Using existing technology, the gasoline and diesel obtained from the oil sands are less than 50% of the total mass. With the new technology, the proportion can be increased to about 70%.

The oil sands are mainly concentrated in Canada and Venezuela, but they have not been widely used due to the high production costs and the inability to fully obtain high value-added gasoline and diesel oil.

The new technology uses cheaper iron ore as a catalyst and the production equipment is also very simple, so the production cost is greatly reduced.

After the refinery extracts gasoline and diesel from crude oil, the remaining heavy oil can only be used as fuel for boilers and ships. The new technology developed this time can also make effective use of the remaining heavy oil in the refinery.

The researchers said that in the future they will prepare to cooperate with oil companies and steel companies to conduct research and strive to make new technologies practical. (Reporter Lan Jianzhong)
