Japan uses graphite to synthesize crystal particles with tiny artificial diamonds

Xinhua News Agency, a research group in Japan published a paper in the March 20th issue of the American Physical Review Newsletter, saying that they synthesized synthetic diamond with graphite. Because the size of the crystal particles has shrunk to the limit, theoretically speaking, The hardness of this substance is extremely high.
Graphite and diamond are allomorphs composed of carbon elements, and their interatomic structures are quite different. Synthetic diamonds have higher atomic densities than natural diamonds.
Researchers from institutions such as Hyogo University of Education and Tokyo Institute of Technology used neutron ray to irradiate graphite in an experimental reactor, followed by impacting graphite with a metal sheet moving at a speed of 1.7 km per second, and then applying high temperature and high pressure to the graphite. . After this series of "destruction", graphite will break into particles, and its maximum size is only 100 microns. The researchers used light to illuminate and analyze the particles, and found that the crystal particles were randomly arranged and oriented differently, forming a synthetic diamond whose crystal particles were small enough to reach the limit.
