On the 7th of this month, solar-solar company Solar Stratos officially opened the Solar Stratos solar plane and its hangar in Payerne, Switzerland. The company plans to carry out an epoch-making mission - let the solar-powered aircraft fly to the edge of space, and plans to carry out a 5-hour space flight round-trip mission in 2018. This solar-powered aircraft is expected to fly into space within 2 hours and undergo a 15-minute "star cruise" before returning to the ground within 3 hours.
Solar Stratosde's solar-powered aircraft, manufactured by PC-Aero, is designed for a two-seat passenger seat. It has a 8.5-metre fuselage and is equipped with a 32-kilowatt electric engine and a 20-kilowatt lithium-ion battery, covering a total of 22 square meters of solar panels on both sides of the wing. Life time is more than 24 hours. During the stratospheric flight to 75,000 feet (about 22,860 meters), both aircraft and pilots will experience low temperatures of -70 degrees Celsius and pressures of only 5% of the Earth's low pressure.
This aircraft is the world’s first commercial two-seat solar-powered aircraft and will also be the world's first solar-powered aircraft to fly into the stratosphere. In fact, this flight project was started two years ago, and SolarStratos' hangar was finally completed this month and will serve as a mission operational base.
