Vehicle Rescue Skills (Field Treatment) Site Commander

The role of the field commander is primarily responsible for safety: identifying site hazards, establishing priorities, and communicating these to the technical team.

The field commander is responsible for the smooth handling of the accident. The on-site commander will master the information and formulate a rescue plan. Once the plan is established, the on-site commander will monitor, inspect, and adopt it when necessary. On-site commanders must maintain communication with technical and medical aid workers to ensure the desired results of the program.

Field commanders are crucial. Remember that the role of the field commander is responsible for command and control. The focus of the field commander should remain unchanged. Other agencies on the site are easily distracted and this situation should be avoided (in addition to medical personnel), and when necessary (and if staff allow), an expert can be assigned to communicate with the police.

An effective field commander should foresee delays in the rescue and, if necessary, amend the plan to ensure that any changes are fully communicated.

An effective rescue team does not require on-site commanders to guide during the rescue process. The technical team should have the ability to execute the proposed plan without detailed instructions. This can only be achieved through training and prior preparation.

Once it is fully inside the vehicle and the rescue phase begins, the on-site commander must transfer control to the physician (or the person responsible for the diversion of the injured person) while still being responsible for safety issues.

Once the rescue phase is completed, the on-site commander must respond to the command and control of the entire incident.
