What should I pay attention to when starting an Ito power generating unit in a cold climate?
Glow plug warm-up (user-supplied)
The glow plug system supplies heat to the cylinder so that the compression temperature is sufficient to ignite the fuel.
When the temperature is 10°C or lower, an air intake air preheater can be used to help start the engine. The preheating device includes a switch for turning on the glow plug circuit. The glow plug is energized by the battery. The fuel burns in the intake manifold to heat the inhaled air.
Note: Do not use starter steam with preheater. Doing so will result in fire.
The steps for using a preheater during a cold start are as follows:
1. Set the throttle to the idle position. Turn the glow plug toggle switch to the ON position. The red indicator light should be on.
2. After the red indicator lights up for 20 seconds, start the engine. As soon as the engine turns, the preheater hand pump is turned on to maintain a fuel pressure of 552 to 689 kilopascals. If a hand oil pump is used before 20 seconds, the glow plug will get wet and prevent heating.
3. If the engine cannot start within 30 seconds, stop turning the engine. Wait a minute or two before starting.
4. After starting the engine, slowly pump the hand pump to keep the engine running smoothly. In cold climates, it takes 4 to 5 minutes or more. Do not speed up the engine.
5. When the engine is hot, stop pumping oil when the engine oil pumping stroke is no longer vibrating. Close and lock the hand pump. Turn off the glow plug toggle switch (red light off).
6. If the engine has no signs of starting during the three full strokes of the preheater pump head, check if the intake manifold is hot. If not hot, check the circuit and glow plugs.
Note: The preheater hand pump, switch and resistor are located on the dashboard and should be checked during engine start.
Flame preheater (user-supplied)
Under the ambient temperature of 0°C to -40°C, the system automatically starts working according to the temperature signal of the engine coolant measured by the water temperature sensor and the battery voltage signal, so that the surface of the heating element of the glow plug quickly reaches the ignition temperature of 850 to 950°C. The driver can operate the key switch according to the lamp signal. When the engine is running under the drag of the starter motor, the solenoid valve automatically opens the oil circuit, supplies fuel to the hot flame glow plug, generates an injection flame to heat the intake air in the intake pipe, and the auxiliary diesel engine starts in a short time. After completing the prescribed working procedures, the electronic controller automatically cuts off power and stops working.
Note: Do not use auxiliary starting devices with flame preheaters or glow plugs. Doing so will result in fire.
Recommended starting method when using Fleetguard auxiliary starting device
1. Set the throttle to the idle position.
2. Disengage the transmission mechanism or shift the transmission to the neutral position.
3, open the manual fuel shut-off valve or electric fuel cut-off valve.
4. Start the starter and supply the proper amount of starter fluid when the engine of the diesel generator rotates until the engine runs smoothly and idly.
Use starter fluid without metering equipment
1. When one person starts the engine, another person sprays the starter fluid into the air cleaner.
Note: Do not allow the starter fluid near the open flame. Do not use it with preheaters or flame spray equipment. Do not breathe primer fumes. The starter fluid is too high to cause excessive pressure and cause knock or engine overspeed.
2. Starter fluid fumes are drawn into the intake manifold of the engine and the engine should start without difficulty.
Note: Starter Fluid or Volatile Fuel Oil must not be used in underground mines or pit operations. If the engine is equipped with such equipment, it should be asked whether the local mine inspector can be used as a starting aid.
