On the afternoon of May 3, Beijing time, informed sources revealed that EU trade officials would recommend punitive import tariffs on solar panels worth billions of euros from China. The move risks angering Beijing, which means setting up a barrier to protect European producers.

The problem facing the EU now is how to prevent China's cheap goods from being dumped in Europe, and Brussels also hopes to take this opportunity to create a relaxed living environment for the European local economy and enterprises. On Wednesday, EU Trade Commissioner Carlo De Gucht said the EU should tax solar panels from China. This type of goods produced in China exceeded the demand of the world's consumer market by more than three times between 2009 and 2011.

Diplomats said that De Gucht will propose the above measures at the meeting of EU trade experts, and the temporary tax will take effect before June 6. However, the decision to impose tariffs still leaves room for subsequent negotiations between the EU and Beijing. The above taxation of PV module products in China may take up to five years.
