Mankind is currently facing a very serious plastic waste problem, and this problem will only continue to expand in the future. In order to turn these plastic waste into treasure, the research team from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore has found a new breakthrough: turning these plastic waste into a chemical substance, and exposing it to sunlight can be used in hydrogen fuel cells Generate electrical energy.
The key breakthrough of this scientific project is a new type of photocatalyst, which uses light energy to promote chemical reactions. In order to find new ways to convert plastic waste into useful chemicals, the NTU research team tried various materials and finally found a highly economical and biocompatible metal-vanadium. The metal is currently widely used in steel and aluminum alloys in automobiles and aircraft. Scientists have found that this metal can play a very important role in plastic recycling.
By adding a vanadium-based catalyst to a solution containing plastic waste, heating it to 85 ° C (185 ° F) and exposing it to artificial sunlight, the team was able to destroy key structures in the plastic structure after 6 days. Previously, if you wanted to break these carbon-carbon double bonds, you often needed to use high temperature, and now scientists use sunlight to find a greener way forward.
But this scientific research not only broke these carbon-carbon double bonds, but also converted these plastic wastes into formic acid. This is a natural antibacterial agent and the simplest combination of hydrogen and carbon dioxide we know. This makes it one of our candidates for pursuing liquid hydrogen carriers in fuel cell vehicles. If formic acid can be obtained from plastic waste, then the prototype equipment is estimated to generate 7,000 kWh of electricity per year, which is completely zero emissions.
